Ibiza vs Formentera: Which Island Is Better for a Nude Beach Holiday?

Ibiza and Formentera are probably the world’s best excuses to leave your swimsuit in your suitcase. They lie right next to each other off the Spanish Mediterranean coast, but the difference in vibe between the two can be massive. So which one belongs on your next nude beach holiday? Let’s break it down.

First, a Word About Nudity in Spain

Spain is famously relaxed about nudity, and the general rule of thumb is that you can strip off almost anywhere once you’re away from towns and big crowds. It’s less about looking for a specific sign and more about reading the room, or in this case, the beach. On both islands, nude-friendly stretches are easy to find, and most of the time you won’t be the only naked person around.

Ibiza: Variety Is the Name of the Game

Being the larger island, Ibiza is all about options. One day you’re on a flat rock that feels like a giant sun lounger, the next you’re in a sandy cove that requires a bit of a hike to reach. Finding beaches where you can go naked is genuinely easy here, but with one important caveat: as the season fills up and the crowds grow, the informal nude zones tend to shrink. And the formal ones too, actually.

If you want maximum space without feeling like a tourist attraction, aim for the shoulder season. May or late September is the sweet spot. It’s warm enough to swim, but you won’t be fighting for every square centimetre of sand.

Ibiza’s nude beaches

Cala Tarida is a good example of how Ibiza’s beaches shift with the season. The main stretch becomes a sea of umbrellas and buckets, but head to the sides, and you’ll find smaller coves sheltered by rocks. That’s typically where the clothes come off.

If you’re based near Ibiza Town, Playa de s’Estanyol is your closest nude escape. It’s not a large beach, but it feels hidden, which is a rare quality when you’re that close to the main party hubs.

Things get a bit more official at Cala Escondida, where a giant yellow rock painted with “Nude Beach” leaves no room for ambiguity. The beach is small and sheltered by cliffs, and the water is beautifully calm. The slight irony is that because it’s so appealing, clothed visitors from neighbouring beaches tend to spill over when those get too full. So you may occasionally find yourself being one of the only few naked people in a sea of bikinis. But they won’t care, because that relaxed, no-judgement atmosphere is very much part of what Ibiza stands for.

For something more dramatic, Punta Galera trades sand for a stack of huge flat rocks. Not the most comfortable surface, but the setting is genuinely striking. It tends to be quiet. Everyone is just minding their own business, soaking up the heat. It’s a side of Ibiza that feels a world away from the clubs.

For a proper long nude beach day, Playa de Es Cavallet is the one. Wide stretches of sand, and a vibe that gets progressively more naked the further you walk from the car park. Parking is easiest at the northern end, and the whole stretch towards the south is generally considered nude territory, with the epicentre around the Chiringay beach bar.

Cala Nova offers something a little different. The nude section sits right in the middle of the beach rather than being pushed to the edges. It might be an unusual sight, but there’s something genuinely liberating about not being pushed towards the sides for once.

Further north-east, Es Figural and Agua Blanca have a rougher feel. The scenery is more rugged and the sea a touch choppier. But they both offer excellent skinny-dipping spots and rarely get crowded even as the main season heats up.

Formentera: The Island That Doesn’t Need to Try

Formentera has no airport, so the only way to get here is by ferry from Ibiza. A thirty-minute crossing that acts like a very effective filter. It weeds out everyone who can’t be bothered with the extra step, and what’s left is an island that’s slower, quieter, and noticeably less concerned with being seen.

The whole island functions essentially as one big nude beach, with only a few exceptions. Unless you’re at the urban beach in Es Pujols or you’ve landed on an unusually crowded stretch, going naked is simply the default way to spend a beach day.

Formentera’s nude beaches

Down at Migjorn on the south coast, you’ve got kilometres of space. If you’re the type who hates being within earshot of someone else’s conversation, this is your beach. Hang out near the Blue Bar area, and you’ll find other nude sunbathers easily, walk further and the beach gradually empties out.

A short drive brings you to Playa Es Caló, divided into three bays. The first bay tends to be swimsuit territory, but by the second and third, the swimsuits come off naturally.

The crown jewel of Formentera’s nude scene is Ses Illetes in the north. It’s a narrow peninsula with water on both sides, sitting within a protected natural park. Because of the geography, wind direction matters. If the wind is coming from the east, the western side will be calm, and vice versa. The further you walk toward the tip of the peninsula, the better it gets.

Ses Illetes is considered one of the Top 5 most beautiful beaches in the world, a title that unfortunately draws plenty of day-trippers from Ibiza. But these almost always stop at the first patch of sand they see. Walk for fifteen minutes, and you’ll find stretches where it’s just you, open water, and the seagulls.

If Ses Illetes feels too busy, Playa Levante, further south on the same peninsula, is a solid alternative. It’s a little less picturesque, but it’s large enough that there will always be a quiet corner to claim.

Where to stay on the islands

Neither Ibiza nor Formentera has clothes-free resorts or dedicated naturist hotels, so don’t expect to drop your bags and your clothes at the same time. Your best bet for finding a place to stay is to search on Booking.com or Agoda.

Most people who want to maximise their time without clothes opt for private rentals, an apartment or villa with a secluded terrace or private garden can make a real difference, and a well-placed rental can mean spending the morning naked at home before heading to the beach.

If you’re planning to focus on one particular beach, it’s worth looking for something within walking distance. That said, both islands are relatively compact, so renting a car and staying somewhere central is a perfectly workable strategy that gives you the flexibility to explore several beaches over the course of your stay.

So, Which Island Should You Choose?

Choose Ibiza if you want variety, larger coves, a mix of beach styles, and the option to end the day at a proper beach bar. Just be mindful of timing, the warmer it gets, the less naked it becomes. Which, yes, is counterintuitive, but that’s Ibiza for you.

Choose Formentera if you’re travelling closer to peak summer, or if you’re after something that feels less like a holiday destination and more like the edge of the world. On Formentera, being naked isn’t a statement, it’s just the logical way to spend the day. The island is slower, quieter, and has considerably less ego.

Both islands are genuinely wonderful. But they’re serving different needs, and knowing which one matches yours will make all the difference.

  1. Those cliffs and rock formations are really something. It looks like the water may have been MUCH higher a long time ago. But back to the nude beaches…..NEAT!!!
